So, you’ve decided that you want to bring sustainability into your wedding, but you have no idea what that means or where to start. Well, here are my top tips for bringing sustainability into your wedding.

  1. Choose a Few Areas to Focus On. There is so much that you can do to green your wedding that it’s easy to get overwhelmed very quickly and shut down. Instead of trying to focus on everything, decide on one to three things that you want to focus on. For example, serving sustainable food, printing everything on 100% recycled content paper, and minimizing your waste. Those three alone with have a myriad of decisions and potential obstacles, but you’ll be able to pin your focus on a few items.

  1. Work in Partnership with Vendors. A reason why you might think it’s going to be too challenging to work on greening your wedding is because there might reluctance on the part of your vendors. I’ve found that instead of dictating what I want to happen with vendors around my events, that I’ve had greater success in making it more of a conversation and a partnership. How can you work together to help reach your goals? How are you making them a part of your story? A caterer is going to love to share how they’re highlighting a local farm for your wedding, because it’s a great story and allows them to be a part of the process. Start by hearing about what your vendor might already be doing, and if they aren’t doing anything at all, well then they can only improve!

  1. Share with Your Guests. Don’t keep what you’re doing do green your wedding to yourself! Share this with your guests. These are some of the people who are most important to you, so make sure to share in advance and at the wedding that they’re attending an event that has taken its impact on the environment into consideration.

Those are my top tips for what to think about when looking to green your wedding. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing even more tips about how to green your wedding. Next time, I’ll be writing more specifically about how to get started.
